At a Crossroads: WESTWEEK Defines the ‘Design-Art’ Relationship


At WESTWEEK’s C Magazine keynote, Editor in Chief Melissa Goldstein moderated a conversation about the intersection of art and design between LA><ART><DESIGN chair and interior decorator Oliver M. Furth and artists David Wiseman, Stefan Bishop andTanya Aguiniga.

“Design-Art is a nice term in terms of narrowing down the large concept that is art” said Stefan. “The word design brings functionality or utility. It takes an art concept and puts it into utility.”

Dream Team Designers and Architects Visit WESTWEEK


When architects and designers have mutual respect and admiration for each other, the design possibilities are endless. To round out WESTWEEK, AIA Executive Director Nicci Solomons engaged interior designers Joan Behnke and Dorothy Macik, and architects Hagy Belzberg and David Hertz in conversation to reveal the creative and practical opportunities of the team approach.

Hagy’s recent project, the Gores Group Headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard, was on its last legs before Joan came in to “save the day.” Joan had been a longtime friend of the client and lobbied for Hagy and his firm.

Pam Jaccarino Gets Up-Close-and-Personal with Mary McDonald During WESTWEEK


On Day 2 of WESTWEEK, the Los Angeles design community gathered once again at the PDC to see celebrated product designer, author and TV personality Mary McDonald chat with Luxe Interiors + Design Editor in Chief Pam Jaccarino.

Pamela initiated the conversation by asking Mary about the style icons of her youth. Both her mother and her grandmother had backgrounds in fashion, which is what Mary studied after graduating from college.

Having a strong online identity has become more important than ever for the design industry. Some designers even started their business first on blogs or social media. During WESTWEEK, two panels addressed this phenomenon: “Design in the Digital Age” at Crestron and “Using Social Media to Grow Your Brand” at Reagan Hayes.

A “group therapy” session took place at Thomas Lavin where Elle Decor Home Furnishings Director Karen Marx moderated a discussion with furniture designer Dakota Jackson, interior designers Madeline Stuart and Chris Barrett, architect Andrew Skurman and homeowner Cecilia Soto-Loftus.
